Colour ringed birds

Just some of the photos sent to us of Manx colour-ringed birds, or birds colour-ringed elsewhere and then seen in the Isle of Man.

Great Black-backed Gull 'M64:M' was seen at Kilmore Quay, Co Wexford, Ireland, on 3/12/20. Ringed as a chick on the Calf of Man on 18/7/19, it was next seen on Skomer Island, Pembrokeshire, on 13/10/19. It was then seen in a garden in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, on 17/2/20. [Photo: Kieran Grace]


Herring Gull 'T5YR' was seen at Grangecastle Business Park, Dublin,on 22/11/20. This is the first report of this bird since it was ringed as chick on the Calf of Man on 13/7/19. [Photo: Graham Prole]













Rock Pipit 'left leg: pale pink above pale pink; right leg: blue above metal' was photographed at the 'boat park' by Ramsey Harbour. This bird was ringed at the same location on 1/11/16. This is the first sighting since then. [Photo: Fred Hodgson]













Herring Gull 'T1XE' was at Sean Walsh Park, Dublin, again on 11/11/20. Ringed on the Calf of Man on 2/7/20. This is the third sighting since it was ringed, all sightings have been at Sean Walsh Park. [Photo: Graham Prole]








Great Black-backed Gull 'S39:M' was at Ardglass Harbour, Co. Down, on 8/11/20. Ringed as an adult on the Calf of Man on 28/5/18, it has been seen twice more on the Calf and three other times at Ardglass Harbour. [Photo: Gary Platt]









Herring Gull 'T3WZ' was seen on the Avoca River Estuary in Arklow on Sunday evening 18/10/20. It was ringed on the Calf of Man as a chick on 30/6/20. This is the first sighting since then. [Photo: Joe Lennon]



Herring Gull 'T2XE' was seen at Dungarvan, County Waterford on 12/10/20. It was ringed as a chick on 2/7/20. This is the second sighting of this bird since it was ringed, the first being at Bray Harbour on 15/8/20. [Photo: via Sam Bayley]


Herring Gull 'T4WT' was photographed visiting the garden of a house in Douglas on 5/10/20. It was ringed a chick on the Calf of Man on 23/6/19. This was the first reported sighting since then. [Photo Stella Corlett]


Lesser Black-backed Gull 'T6VD' was seen at Quateria fishing port, in the Algarve, Portugal, on 2/10/20. It was seen in Bedfordshire on 26/8/20, obviously on its way south. Ringed as a breeding adult bird at the Point of Ayre, Isle of Man, on 27/5/15, it was also reported from different sites in England on 14/8/18 and 28/8/18. This is an unusual pattern of sightings. It is likely that this bird is still breeding in the Isle of Man, but it seems to like stopping off in England on its way south in the autumn. Most other Lesser Black-backed appear to go south more quickly than this bird. [Photo: Georg Schreier]

Lesser Black-backed Gull 'T2VJ' was seen again at Torreira, Portugal, on 25/8/20. Ringed as adult at the Point of Ayre Gravel Pits on 2/6/15, then seen at Bent Lane, Whitmore, Staffordshire on 15/2/17, at Espinho, Aveiro, Portugal on 31/8/17 and at Torreia on 10/8/20.. [Photo: José Tavares]








Great Black-backed Gull 'T5ZX' landed on Brian Chambers' fishing boat on 24/8/20 roughly about 3 miles east of Annalong on the east coast of Northern Ireland. Ringed as a chick on 3/7/14 at the Point of Ayre at the northern tip of the Isle of Man. It has never been reported before. [Photo: Brian Chambers]















Great Black-backed Gull 'S76:M' was seen at Hoylake shore on the Wirral, Merseyside, on 22/8/20. Ringed as a chick on the Calf of Man in 2015, it was later reported in Ireland in 2015 and 2018, before being seen at Oakenholt RSPB Reserve on 29/12/19. [Photo: Tim Kinch]

Wheatear 'CC4' was seen at Barbury Castle, on the Ridgeway south of Swindon, Wiltshire, on 18/8/20. It was ringed as a juvenile on the Calf of Man on 24/6/19. Herring Gull 'T2XE' was seen at Bray Harbour, Co. Wicklow, on 18/8/20. This was the first sighting since it was ringed as a chick on the Calf of Man on 2/7/20.

Lesser Black-backed Gull 'T85:M' was seen on the Praia da Saúde beach, Costa da Caparica, Setúbal, Portugal, on 11/8/20. This is a well-reported bird. Since being ringed as a chick on the Calf of Man on 4/7/18, it was then seen on 11/9/18 at Mira Beach, Coimbra, Portugal, then at Costa de Caparica, Portugal, on 24/10/18, Jardim Amália Rodrigues, Lisbon on 11/11/18, Costa de Caparica again on 10/9/19, Radipole Lake RSPB reserve, Dorset, on 22/5/20 and Shrewton Pig Farm, Wiltshire, 3/7/20. Great Black-backed Gull 'M62:M' landed on a fishing vessel in the Irish Sea on 3/6/20, 35 nautical miles WSW of the Calf of Man. M62:M was ringed as a chick on 26/6/19 on the Calf of Man.It was then seen on 25/5/20 at Ardglass Harbour, Co. Down. So this report is the second since it was ringed. [Photo: Sean McKinley]

Herring Gull 'T4WG' was in a flock of  approximately 225 Herring Gulls in Bray Harbour, Co. Wicklow, on 23/5/20. It was ringed on the Calf of Man as a chick on 26/6/19. It has been seen on six previous occasions at Bray, between September and December 2019. [Photo: Joe Lennon]

Herring Gull 'T1WF' was on the Dargle River, Bray, Co. Wicklow, on 22/5/20. It was in a flock of c55 Herring Gulls flying between the river and a nearby supermarket roof. Ringed as a pullus on the Calf of Man on 30/6/19, T1WF has been seen at Bray on five previous dates between February and April 2020. [Photo: Joe Lennon]

Lesser Black-backed Gull 'T85:M' was spotted in the car park at RSPB Radipole, Weymouth, Dorset, on 22/5/20. Ringed as a pullus on the Calf of Man on 4/7/18, it is now in its third calendar year. The plumage is still showing that it is distinctly a juvenile. It has been seen on four previous occasions, all in Portugal: 11/9/18 (Mira Beach, Coimbra), 24/10/18 (Costa de Caparica), 11/11/18 (Lisbon), 18/9/19 (Costa de Caparica). [Photo: Edmund Mackrill]



Oystercatcher 'APH' was seen on The Ayres on 9/5/20. Ringed at Rostrevor, Carlingford Lough, Co. Down, as an adult on 12/12/19, this was the first sighting since then. Note the identifying mark here is a leg flag, not a colour ring. [Photo: Jeremy Paul]


Herring Gull 'T8ZH' is a regular visitor to the balcony of a flat in Port Erin (even though it is not getting fed). This bird was ringed as a chick on the Calf of Man on 20/6/12. It was seen in Dublin in December 2012. Since then it was seen four times on the Calf of Man in both 2017 and 2018. This photo was taken 11/4/20. [Photo: Jo Lewy]

Herring Gull 'T3YY' was present at Parnell Bridge, Wicklow Town, Co Wicklow, Ireland on 5/3/20. It was amongst a total flock of 52 Herring Gulls and 62 Black-headed Gulls. Record shot of Great Black-backed Gull 'S43:M' at Nevern Estuary, Pembrokeshire, on 1/3/20. It is mostly hidden by the bird in front. This bird was ringed as a chick on the Calf of Man on 26/6/17.
